There was a nice, solid increase now for the ABC Soaps and  I wonder what could have contributed to that.  I can understand an increase for GH- it is superb but for OLTL and AMC, I do not believe so much.  Although their storylines are must-see, I am not drawn in like this mysterious killer storyline on GH.  On OLTL, I could care less if Marcie is caught and I really don’t care who gets Asa’s estate- that’s just boring to me.  On AMC- why not just kill Richie off already and now I hate Kendall more than ever before.  Trust me this improvement is no going to last for all ABC soaps, I guarantee that in a week’s time that GH will be the only ABC soap to have an improvement- just watch and see.

*Dailies are not available at this time.

It has finally happened, an ABC soap has hit rock bottom and I can say that I am not surprised. With the lack of excitement and intrigue on AMC, they deserve the low ratings- maybe they will take a lesson from this disappointment. As for OLTL and GH- they are well on their way to becoming better and they would never end up on bottom. I wonder how one soap could just lose 142,000 viewers in one week, now that is one dissatisfied group of viewers. Here’s a good way to bring back viewers TPTB at AMC, bring back the vets that we all love and stop focusing on newbies with no history such as Annie.

As for the other soaps, it appears that the disaster stunt that the Young and the Restless planned worked out well for their ratings- they gained a substantial amount of viewers. Days of Our Lives has improved lately with a bevy of interesting storylines including the Salem U. rapist and the aftermath of John Black’s Death. I could see Days of our Lives in the top three by the end of the year- it just keeps getting better. The Bold and the Beautiful are so far ahead of the rest, except for obviously Y&R, and from what I hear great storyline is ahead for this good soap opera. I guess the future of soaps is not in dire straits and there is a chance that they can survive but its called the domino effect that plays a role. One soap gets cancelled-quite soon another has to be cancelled but hopefully that is not the case at all.

So all ABC soaps (All My Children, General Hospital, One Life to Live) have hit rock bottom in the household ratings, what else is new? This was an inevitability with the recent trend of storytelling on soaps, it needs to change and change fast or else many soaps will dip into the single digit household ratings. I don’t think at this time that canceling any soap for that matter will help in any way at all, it would lower morale as I see it.

The free fall continues with the ratings, there is no real boost in any soap, although the storylines are A+. I have an idea, with the dwindling number of soaps- I and others would love to view live episodes, now that would be very real. I would love if every soap opera would just devote an entire week to live performances- like soaps of old. But that won’t save this dying medium, it is doomed for failure. Especially ABC soaps, they are all around the same ratings number and thus are not cutting it.

I decided to go in more depth this week and give more detailed ratings info even if most of it is b.s. This whole rating system is flawed, how can you count that all of these people watch the show, I think that they make up the numbers and estimate where they think it will end up. I don’t feel that any soap can be cancelled at this moment because every soap is failing and thus it is only an industry problem. All I know is that the glory days of high ratings are over and cable is the next destination for soap operas, I’ll estimate in about 10-15 years that will be a reality- because Y&R and B&B have to screw up at some point.

All My Children was one of the two to gain last week and they deserved it, they are spot on nowadays. I thought it was interesting that General Hospital was the only soap to gain viewers since last year, all the others lost hundreds of thousands. I also do not understand how ATWT has more viewers but a lower House Hold rating? This whole system is confusing and I don’t see a solution in sight just yet. I have one suggestion and that is to count DVR, Soapnet, and the Internet to actually find out the total number of viewers for a soap- focus less on demographics, they put too much emphasis on that.

General Hospital and One Life to Live both had a good week, while All My Children stayed in it's current funk. I really think that All My Children is capable of being a top three show, if it tells storylines that we can invest time into. There is no surprise with GH and OLTL- they are rising above other daytime dramas; they are telling the best stories now. DOOL will have to settle for worst soap- the crap that is being dished out each and every week needs a makeover fast.

With All My Children and One Life to Live tying record low House Hold Ratings, the future of these soaps are in question. General Hospital can hold it’s own although it is performing less than stellar. It seems that the week starts off great and then the end of the week, they just fail miserably- there is great material written but they need to have storylines that will draw people in.

What a horrible week for ABC soaps and soaps in general, this genre is going to the doldrums nowadays. They shouldn’t even count ratings because Y&R has bad storylines but is still number one. They should start tracking it more accurately, totally revamp the system or else soaps will be no more.

The week started off great for ABC soaps but then it ended horribly, but at least all of ABC’s soaps gained- which is very impressive. GH should be jockeying for 2nd position and by November Sweeps, I wouldn’t surprised if they were second alone. Now I’m not discounting Bold and the Beautiful and the hot streak they’ve been on, it’s just that it boils down to consistency in which their’s is questionable.

Wow, what a horrible week not only for ABC but NBC soaps and surprise, surprise CBS prevails. These ratings are very scary- many daytime actors should look into finding other jobs because they will not survive for long. But maybe it was just an off week, still in the summer and last Friday was a killer for all ABC Soaps. Hopefully we’ll pick it up next week with the stellar material that is to come.

Wow, a positive week for Daytime as a whole, but what a horrible week for ABC soaps- why is is that the horrific soaps of NBC gain and ABC soaps, for the most part, lose. The ratings will always be an enigma to me.
